Lancaster Deacon launches 'Protect the Pope' Website
Monday, July 19, 2010
Deacon Nick Donnelly, a permanent deacon of the Diocese of Lancaster, has, through his own initiative, launched a website called, Protect the Pope.com to counter the attacks on Pope Benedict’s reputation and integrity from groups such as Protest the Pope.
His website aims to inform Catholics on the law regarding hate crimes and provide them with the means of easily reporting incitement to religious hatred or acts of religious hatred to the police during the Holy Father’s visit.
Protect the Pope.com also seeks to record incidents of anti-Catholicism in the media and internet as a way of raising awareness of this prejudice among Catholics and the wider community.
‘Its been said that anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable prejudice, and in a way we Catholics have colluded in this by ignoring it, hoping it will go away. But the personal attacks on Pope Benedict in the run up to the Papal visit show us its not going away.
Since 2006 we’ve had the legal right to protect ourselves from religious hatred. Of course people in this country have freedom of expression, but this does not mean they have the right to create a climate of hostility and fear. It’s a question of protecting our human rights to freedom of belief and freedom of worship.’

In line with Fit for Mission? Bishop Campbell decrees that St Mary's Parish Cleator & St Joseph's Parish Frizington are merged
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
So as to strengthen pastoral care in West Cumbria and given the constraints of the smaller numbers of people at Mass and fewer priests to serve them and after proper consultation, Bishop Campbell has decreed that, as from the first Sunday Celebration of Mass on Sunday 11 July 2010 the parish of St Joseph, Frizington, is suppressed (c.515 S2) and that this parish shall become completely incorporated into the territory of the parish of St Mary, Cleator.
The name of the new parish will be St Mary & St Joseph, Cleator & Frizington.

Lancaster Diocesan Faith & Justice Commission involved in National Justice & Peace Network National Conference (16-18 July)
Thursday, February 18, 2010
The Lancaster Diocesan Faith & Justice Commission is involved in the planning of the National Justice and Peace Network National Conference, “Our Daily Bread: Food Security, People and Planet” 16th -18th July this year.
Food is so essential a part of our lives that the “breaking of bread” with others celebrates love, mutuality and the gifts of the natural world. Yet the food system upon which we depend is increasingly fragile. One in six people in the world goes hungry, low income groups have trouble accessing nutritious food and justice is denied to many of the world’s producers. The conference will explore the food system and exciting new initiatives to help us reconnect to sustainable agriculture and food, and highlights insights into "our daily bread" offered by our faith and worship. There will be excellent speakers and workshops, the liturgy for the weekend is being planned by Simon Stewart and the music by Rosa Trelfa.
To find out more information or to download a booking form go to the Faith & Justice Commission Page of the of the Diocesan Website.

Propositions of the recent African Synod
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
The Vatican has published here, in English translation, the full text of the 57 propositions approved by the Synod of Bishops for Africa in a final meeting of the Synod's General Congregation on 24 October.
Pope Benedict XVI has begun the practice of allowing publication of the propositions approved by Synod meetings. In the past these propositions were addressed only to the Roman Pontiff, who used them as the basis for an Apostolic Exhortation summarizing and concluding the work of the Synod. Pope Benedict has decided instead that the propositions should be made public immediately after the Synod meeting, with the Apostolic Exhortation to follow later.
